The island of Crete, which has been at the crossroads of cultures between two seas since the earliest periods of history, has also supported this feature with its social structure under Ottoman rule. For approximately two hundred years, Greek and Muslim communities have exhibited an example of living together. The family names that are the product of this intertwined life allow Cretans to follow their family ties and family trees even today. The suffix “aki” used by families in Crete, whether Turkish or Greek, literally means “zade”, and this suffix is only used on the island of Crete; it is not used anywhere else in the geography of Greece.

In this study, the “Cretan Marriage Book” in the General Directorate of Foundations Archive, which will bring to light a significant portion of the family names of Cretan Muslims, was examined. Although the book dates back to 1916-1921, there is no explanation in its content about the city it belongs to. However, in our examination, we determined that the book belongs to Rethymno. Therefore, it is possible to say that the majority of the people in the book reside in the city of Rethymno.
